2016 Laramie - EGR/Cooler failed - what to do in 2024?

So at 206K, my EGR finally failed (I guess). With various emissions codes showing and about a 10% drop in power and MPG, I took it to a reputable local shop that supposedly knows these engines. His diagnosis: "Upon Removal, found Vacuum Actuator Broken and has damaged Cooler, Cooler not sold individually, only as a kit. Also requires coolant.".

They're wanting $2220 for the complete EGR/Cooler assembly, plus assorted sundries for a total bill of $3500+. Obviously that's not horrible in comparison to many, but I'd probably be ready to do a Stage 2 delete - if I could figure out if it's even still possible! We don't have inspections in my part of Colorado, so not worried about that. Failing that, I was trying to source the assembly for something less than the shop's charge. That research turned into a minefield of various part numbers, both original and "campaign" parts.

Oh, and all recalls have been done, including the EGR back in 2019 (which makes me wonder, what parts did they use back then and were they the corrected ones, or still problematic? Many threads seem to say the final/fixed version of the assembly wasn't available until 2020).

Specific questions:

1) is it still possible to get a Stage 2 (or 1 for that matter) delete done in the US? It seems the kits are readily available - it's the tunes that are problematic? If still possible, who would you recommend?

2) Will the later model (2019+) EGR Cooler assemblies fit my 2016, and is that recommended? If not, does anyone have the definitive part numbers for the "corrected" EGR Cooler for my year?

3) Should I just bite the bullet and go with the shop's recommendation? Even if I do, I'm worried about all the other potential failures showing up soon after, such as intake, DPF, etc. If I was reasonably confident it would last another 50K+ without significant issues, I'd probably just go with it.

To answer your question #1, your best option is MRT Stage 2 tunes and EOC delete parts, all via EOC. If you cannot do it yourself, find a local shop to do it. It's not hard, just labor intensive.

Thanks, but it appears EOC is "local pickup only". That's more or less what I meant about tuning - it seems many companies won't ship tuners any more.

Wow! Wasn't aware of "no shipping". That's new.

I read it as "local pick up available" Under the delivery options it shows their shipping options.

I went all the way through to check out, and it said "Shipping is not available for Colorado - please enter a new address". So at least not available for my state!

Wow, I wonder if it has something to do with them being closed for a while or they can't ship to the US anymore

EoC were willing g to ship to me 3 months ago, and I live in New Zealand. If push comes to shove, have it divered to a shipping agent on Canadian side of the border then shipped to CO from there.

That's a thought! So how did it work out for you, since it sounds like you went that way?

We don't have inspections in my part of Colorado, so not worried about that. Failing that,
I'm your neighbor to the south of you. We don't have emissions inspection in New Mexico, either. However, it's still a federal crime to remove emissions, so for that reason, I will keep my truck emissions compliant for as long as I legally have to. Obviously, you have to make that decision for yourself. If you are comfortable with breaking federal law, then that's totally up to you.

Since I'm keeping my truck emissions compliant, I've been buying emissions parts when I find them on sale. I recently bought the entire EGR assembly for $332.54.

EGR Cooler: $275.00
Shipping: $32.73
Tax: $24.81
Order total: $332.54

So, if you choose to keep your truck emissions complaint, you can do it for much cheaper if you shop parts and stock up when you can find them at a good price. It will save you thousands of dollars. I bought two intake manifolds for around $200 a piece and one was shipped for free.
