Good evening all,

The ETC warning light came on out of nowhere this past week. Turned off my 2018 Ecodiesel and when I went to turn it back on the truck was having trouble starting. Called the dealer and was thinking it was fuel pressure related as I got my high pressure fuel pump replaced through recall about 8 months ago. Come to find out the crankshaft tone wheel was starting to fall apart and a $200 part will cost me $2500 total to install because you have to drop the transmission to access it. Absolutely crazy. Any help or dealings with this would provide me great insight.

Unfortunately, it does sound right. The tone wheel is sandwiched between the flex plate and the crankshaft. The trans has to come out to access it, that's why it's so expensive. This happened to me a few years ago. There is an ECM update available (dealer) for this. Essentially, it tells the computer to keep the engine running using the cam position sensor when the crank position system (tone wheel & sensor) loses signal.

The only Help I can offer is to welcome you to the club. I just had mine done at 135K miles on a 2020 ECO. It’s a mystery on why this was seen as a good design. It’s a thin plastic part that is certainly protected in its location between the engine and the transmission, but when it fails, and it inevitably will, the cure for a sub $100 part is breathtaking. And this cannot be located on the other end of the engine why? Still waiting for answer.

This just happened to my 2014, accelerating onto parkway ETC light came on, engine seemed to run fine though. Got home, shut it down and long time cranking before restart with a PO336 code. Did you have the work done to replace sensor and/or tone wheel at the dealer? $2500 seems cheap to drop tranny, DEF tank and connections.
