Recently, I drove home and parked - everything normal. The next morning, it wouldn't start. Normal indications, but when cranking, it would try to light off a couple of cylinders then just spin. That weekend, I connected my code reader - no codes. Fearing the dreaded HPFP failure, I pulled the sensor on the pump and no metal! Not even a flake. I pondered the clues while putting things back together. My T-shooting thoughts: Fuel - HPFP hasn't failed, I could still hear the lift pump before starting, so I'm good there. Air - filter changed a few thousand miles ago, good there. Ignition - If a few glow plugs failed, it would stumble and start then smooth out after several seconds. What if none of the glow plugs came on? Oh, ya, the glow plug light wasn't on very long, like 1 or 2 seconds. This thing has to have some sort of controller for the glow plugs - my GM 6.5 did. After researching online, I found that there is another part number controller that supersedes mine. It's ordered and on the way.
There is only one 45min video about this on YT. The short of it is: The controller is on the passenger fender right next to the ECM (aft of the air filter housing). Looks like a glorified relay (with a glorified price: $130). One plug and one screw. The lock for the plug pulls out sideways like a drawer.
I will post more info after I install the new unit.
