I’ve been a reader of this forum and many others related to the ecodiesel engine but haven’t posted until now. Thanks to everyone in the community for all that you share. I own a 2014 Grand Cherokee ecodiesel. I’ve been through all the settlement recall process (which FCA fought to deny). I’m now being told by FCA’s attorneys that their stance is that they refuse to perform the EGR cooler recall work on my Jeep. The basis of this denial of recall work is one dealer’s false representation that I needed my engine replaced.
FCA claims that because this dealer told them my engine needed replaced, they aren’t obligated to perform the recall. I don’t believe this is accurate. But I’m working with attorneys to resolve the issue and will keep this post updated with what I learn.
I had my oil cooler fail, as many others have experienced with the early model ecodiesel. And took my Jeep to a dealer to have it diagnosed as such. They actually refused to replace the EGR cooler and oil cooler, and claimed I needed a new engine along with many other items which are actually covered under the emissions extended warranty associated with the settlement. However, FCA refused to honor that warranty when I was given this false diagnosis by the dealer.
Regarding the diagnosis, there was a small amount of oil in the coolant (which is what prompted me to tow it to the dealer). But their diagnosis was “replace the engine for $20k or sell it to us for $2k.” Since the Jeep has a market value of $22k and only needed a $250 oil cooler and coolant flush, I obviously refuted their claim asking how they came to this conclusion. Their first response was, “we would need to tear the engine down to fully diagnose the part to rebuild the engine, it’s easier to replace”. Their second statement was “your head gasket is blown” to which I said, “OK, let’s replace the head gasket then!” They said they can’t do that. lol yes they can. But they refused. And so then i proceeded the FCA customer care route which they then denied to honor their warranty. So I asked the dealer to replace the oil cooler (on my dollar), which they also refused to do. At this point I’m skeptical because their story keeps changing and they refuse to do anything other than replace the engine or sell them my Jeep for $2k. So I asked again why I need a new engine. At this point they claimed I had coolant in the oil. And that my “oil looks like a milkshake”. And “we tested the oil and found coolant”. However, when I picked up they had no invoice, no test results, no documentation whatsoever. They gave me the keys and said have a nice day.
So I had the Jeep towed back to my garage, replaced the oil cooler and flushed the coolant. No more oil in the coolant. I visually tested the oil and had the sample lab tested from the time of the oil cooler failure, and unsurprisingly there was no coolant in the oil. Three months have passed and no issues. However, now I’d like to get the EGR recall completed, and they’re refusing to replace the EGR due to the false claims from the dealer that the engine needed replaced.
I don’t believe that one dealer’s representation with no test results or documentation of the diagnosis invalidates the warranty OR the EGR national safety recall. I’m here posting this to share my experience, and to see if others are having the same issues. Maybe we can work together to reach a resolution, settlement, or (worst case) I have to file a lawsuit and go through the courts for a decision.
Please share your thoughts and experiences. In the near future I will share some other information that may be helpful to owners running into other issues with EGR, oil cooler, coolant feed tube, etc. I’ve learned a lot and can’t wait to share.
thanks again to the entire community for partaking in these forums.
