Peculiar oil filter problem

So I have a weird problem/question. We purchased a used 2016 eco diesel. I purchased an after market oil filter for it. When I went to change the oil the oil filter and cap came off as one piece. I tried to remove the filter from the cap but it wouldn’t come out. So I purchased an aftermarket cap. When I tried installing the oil filter and new aftermarket cap I couldn’t. It kept cross-threading. When I compared the threads from the original cap installed in the truck to new after market cap they were different. So I went to the dealer and asked them “what’s up with this?” They said you have a Gen 3 oil adapter. Does that mean I have a Gen 3 engine too?
