2016 EcoDeisel vs. 5.7 Hemi, 1500

I'M NOT TRYING TO START ANY FLAME WARS!!!! Just needing honest answers.

I'm a Ford man here (Ford man since 1978) The current Fords (3.5 ecoboost or diesel) will not get me what I need.

(My Fords, 4x4 Crew Cabs gassers got mileage wise, trouble free except standard stuff, 1985 460cc 325k, 1997 460cc 275k, (8-10 mpg), Diesels - 2004 6.0, 67k lemoned, 2006 6.0 227K (7yr-200k extended warranty paid for itself at 110K, then everything started falling apart again at 227K expired warranty, both Diesel trucks got 14 mpg, (my current ride 2015 Ford 6.2 gasser 12 mpg GREAT TRUCK, TERRIBLE MPG)

I need a truck that will remain trouble free for 150k-200k and get me close to 20 mpg.

I'm changing job positions and will be driving 35-40K annually.

My buddy has a 2015 RAM CC 1500 with 5.7 Hemi. (2wd) He gets 19 mpg (from lie of meter). Another bud has the 2015 RAM CC EcoDiesel 4x4 and gets 24mpg. (I'd prefer a 4x4, even tho I've only locked my wheels in 2-3 annually during last 6 years, only time pulling my boat out on a steep wet ramp)

Both of these trucks will WORK for me....

So really my question is .....
1. do you believe the 2016 Eco Diesel will remain 150K-200K trouble free.
2. Does Ram offer a 200k extended Warranty on the Eco Diesel??

Hey Rick.. Only a few EcoDiesels that I'm aware of that are over the 150K mile mark. At this point I think it's just to early to tell how reliable these motors are long term.

Just my opinion. Welcome to the site!

I have read reports of a number ( 5-10) Ecodiesels used as escort vehicles that are both close to 200,000 miles and at least one is over that.
Cannot verify it now but have read those reports numerous times. There are many, many above 50,000 miles. Early on there were some engine problems but during the past year or so that has dwindled dramatically.

Now - life has no guarantees. One friend of mine bought a Ford with the 5.0 V to stay away from the Ecoboost trouble. Engine warranty was 60K and his broke a valve that tore up a piston that tore up a cylinder and trashed the engine. He had to buy a new engine. There are no guarantees so even if thousands soldier on into the 100's or thousands of miles, that does not mean yours will.

Anything you buy could be a mess. You know about the 6.0 International. You should also know the '01 and '02 Duramax engines were a disaster with fuel injectors. I know that one personally and have refused to go back to GM since.

My '04 Cummins was fine but an input shaft in the transmission got torn up by the flywheel. Had to replace all that stuff and more in 241K in spite of their good reputation. My Ecodiesel has 44K on it right now. Knock on wood.

So the answer to you is...man up, learn like you are and make your own decision. Just do not hold others accountable for trouble but buy me a beer if it works out perfectly.

I forget how many years this engine has been in use in Europe. I believe it depends on your maintenance and how you drive that will determine your engine's longevity. I would like to get 300,000 miles. I get 26mpg combined highway and city. That is calculated with the Fuelio app on my phone after every fill up. If you put the cruise control on at 60 MPH, the mpg meter reads 32 mpg. At 55 MPH, the mpg reads 38! The engine is only turning at 1200 RPM. A full size truck pushes a lot of air, and anything above 55 MPH starts drastically declining mileage. Half of the time I am pulling 500 lb trailers.

I have an AFE free flow air filter and use Power Service fuel additive to clean the injectors and lubricate the fuel pump. These two fixes are EXPENSIVE so $1.80 a fill up is cheap insurance.

Rick, I was in the same boat as you. But previously I drove a Toyota Tacoma and I bought it because of its reliability reputation. And it upheld that reputation. No issues as 140k. But I had to start driving a lot of miles so I needed comfort and a 4wd. I watched the eco diesel for two years comparing it to everything out there since I had no real loyalty in the full size PU market. I finally bit the bullet and bought the eco diesel. Drove from Tennessee to Texas and got 26mpg on the trip....most of it on cruise control. In the mountains of Colorado today with off and on 4wd auto. I got 28.6 mpg.....with heated seats, steering wheel. SO...yes the jury is still out on reliability but for now I am loving this thing.

The 3.0 ECO built for Ram does not have the years or miles the Hemi has. So it is not proven like the Hemi, I have heard like Captain said several 3.0 at or above the 150,000 to 200,000 mile and still going strong, and plan on mine getting there. Will the 3.0 be trouble free, it has had engine problems for some, SCR was a problem, been corrected on the later models, and a couple others within its growing pains, warranty is a good thing. With all the electronics, computers, sensors on all vehicles these days, it is hard to tell on being trouble free, on any vehicle. I bought the 3.0 cause it fit my needs for a truck, and I like it, been a dependable truck to date.
