Crank sensor/reluctor wheel

Engine cut off, whole Xmas tree lit up with a crank/no start... after the tow and a quick scan found 27 codes stored all for different things but what stood out was the crank sensor failure and after researching it I ended up having to pull the trans, slap a new reluctor wheel on it since it broke in the same fashion you see everyone else’s (magnet popped a 3/4” section off) and since I did all that I just replaced the sensor at the same time to alleviate doubling down on the job. Identifix calls for almost 6 hours, realistically it be done in about 3.5 but I did have to drill a 3/8” hole in the side to get the torque converter to line up again for reinstallation... for what it was it was a pricey job, about $415 bucks for both parts plus my time
Since then it’s been about 3 weeks and havnt has a problem since

I just heard today that RAM is recalling the reluctor wheel, call your dealer, parts won't be available until next year, but hopefully you won't be out of pocket! It was literally just announced Aug 12th. Even my dealer didn't know about it until I asked.

I checked my ram recalls for it and it didn,t show anything for it. Hopefully they don,t screw canadians again

I think it will be some software update rather than replacing the actual reluctor wheel... This is the recall, W58. I'm candian too, I called my dealership, and they only hear about it when I asked, then she read what the w58 was and this is what she told me, but she said it won't be available until around Jan 2021.

I don’t understand how a software update is going to prevent the wheel from failing and keep the injectors firing at the right time if the sensor isn’t telling it when to fire off unless it’s going to kick it into limp mode

It won’t prevent anything (it is shite production quality) all I can see it doing is bypassing the “limp” mode if it senses a problem; like the magnet crumbling, and allowing you to possibly continue driving to a “safe place” Without the vehicle dying on the freeway in front of a big rig doing 70mph like mine did

What's the basic rundown on what all needs to be done to pull the trans out of these trucks. My reluctor wheel failed yesterday and I hear the only way they will warranty it is if the crank sensor was damaged also. If it isn't too bad I might try and do it myself but I cannot seem to find much info on how to do it.

Just another short coming of VM Cento, Most modern Day Engines (DSL/GAS) have hardware and the software to operate/pull signal form both CSK/CAM sensor to synchronize needed input.

It was pretty straight forward... if you’ve pulled a trans before you won’t have any trouble that I can think of EXCEPT the one thing I had a problem with was aligning the torque converter... I ended up drilling a hole in the drivers side of it to turn it so I could re align the bolts, and stuck a plug in it after. Some I was doing all that work I just went ahead and replaced the crank sensor too so I wouldn’t have to pull it again

Guys,

Is there any benefits to replacing these parts before they fail ? Are the new OEM parts made better now ? New EcoDiesel owner and looking to fix problems before they start.

Absolutely, but no point in doing it so prematurely. From what I’ve experienced and researched you won’t want to exceed 80k
