We are in negotiations on purchasing a new 2018 Ram Big Horn Eco Diesel Crew Cab 4x4 with a 3.92 rear end. I think they are giving me a great deal for around 38k or so out the door. I want it to tow a bumper pull camper and obviously we would love the fuel economy.

Should I go with the EcoDiesl or should I get the 5.7l Hemi? I know the hemi will give me less fuel economy but I have concerns about the EcoDiesels longevity. I see a lot of people having problems with their EcoDiesels. As well I'll gain almost 2500lbs of towing capacity.

I love the truck and what they say the ecodiesel will produce but is it a proven platform. I'm retiring soon and I don't need to buy a truck that's not going to last and end up leaving me stranded and costing a bucket full of money to fix. I'd love to go 6.7l cummins but just dont have the bucks.

Thanks for any recomendations.

Just my 2 cents, bought my 2015 brand new for the exact same reason. Close to retirement, love the 1/2 ton diesel experience. I also have the 3.92 reared and factory tow package. My camper only weighs 4000 lbs.
I have not had any issues in 31000 miles. no codes, not 1 stumble.
Others do not have the same experience though but I have been a happy eco driver for 3 years.

After reading about the problems it seems a lot of people are having with the ecodiesel as well as it seeming that FCA is not holding up their end in too many cases IMO and the fact that my local dealer has terrible ratings for their service department (manager issues) I opted not to buy the ecodiesel.

I ended up with a 2018 RAM Tradesman 2500 crew cab 6.7L cummins in 2WD. I wanted 4x4 but I just wouldn't spring for the additional cost. For me 4x4 would be a luxury for those emergency situations and would rarely if ever get used. I think I'll add a winch to the front of my truck instead. I know it's not a 1 for 1 replacement for 4x4 but it will work for me.

I ended up getting it for 46K out the door. I don't know if that's a great deal but I'm please.
