Problems with EGR

Watching videos on cleaning our 1500 ecodiesel EGR cooler - ours was a lot cleaner than the pictures, we decided to clean ours. We very carefully removed & cleaned all necessary parts with the recommended brake cleaner. All parts were cleaned & wiped carefully. UNFORTUNATELY nowhere were told the absolute importance of totally drying all cleaned parts. We could easily have dried all parts with compressed air, if drying had been stressed!! After driving no more than 5 miles there was a complete engine failure. After tearing it down there was signs, traces of fluid was pulled into the engine along with chunks of carbon. Now a 1500 ecodiesel engine, with just 55,000 miles has to replaced. It hurts spending $18,000 for something some readily available compressed air would have prevented! Frustrated!!

More info is needed... it's unlikely that cleaning the EGR caused the failure, did You foam the Plenum? If it was cleaned properly their would be NO soot to enter the intake. What exactly did you clean?

We cleaned the end of the EGR cooler with brake cleaner. I thought all the solvent was out of the tube. It ran great for a few miles then died. The soot and carbon appeared ‘wet’ around two or three of the intake valves. ??

RWT.... I don't see HOW YOU could have destroyed your Motor by what you did, it's likely connected to the 20,000+ VM 3.0s that have failed due to poor assembly at Cento Italy.

I guess the best bet would be a Cummins. Very disappointing we’ve taken good care of that engine. Sounds like a so sad from dodge, buy a new one

It's NOT FCA , Ram, it's all on Fiat and VM Motori.... They continued to bring that dam engine to America even though the failure rates were 200+ times more likely to fail than the industry minimum standards Back in late 2015. N/A was well aware of VM Motori short comings, yet many kept on buying into the false and fake advertising. RWT You just one of the 10,000s+ of VM Motori and Fiat's (*&)*()

Our 2016 Ram with its new ecodiesel was picked up today. The paper work from the service head said our problems were from “flushing the engine with EGR cleaner”. OMG no fluid was put in the motor!! The lower cylinders had a damp soot, what could cause that?

The CCV system is garbage on this engine and lets oil mist blow by, which is sucked back into the clean air duct just before turbo compressor. You will find quite a bit of oil in the bottom of intercooler, some of that blows back into intake manifold, then mixes with egr soot to create a black goo. Still amazed there has not been a class action on this engine.
