Tone Wheel Failed

Just informed by dealership that my 2015 Laramie 4x4 has a broken tone wheel. Truck wouldn't start....no warnings...no codes...no CEL. They're installing the recall notice software update but not replacing the tone wheel. Is this the correct procedure? Sounds like a Band-Aid fix to me. How can the truck run and perform correctly with a crucial broken part????? Is the tone wheel redundant? Sorry if I'm sounding clueless but I'm totally confused right now. Also my truck has a stage 2 tune so that's a pain in the butt. I have to track down my 3 year old tune file to reinstall at dealership. Up until now I've had nothing but an awesome 50,000 kms of driving experience with my EcoD!

That’s where it gets weird. If you don’t have the recall done for the tone ring software, they should replace the ring, if you had it done then they just do the software if I recall correctly it’s a pain to remember
