Anyone with good reports of an EcoDiesel?

Hello, I am on my second ED! I love it and highly recommend! My first one was. 2015 and had 208k miles when traded and my new one is a 2021 that I bought used with 6k miles. Guy had it before me didn’t like diesel apparently. New truck is great!
I’ve been a diesel tech for over 30 years and I am sold on the ED! Here’s the key….good and early maintenance. Don’t wait to do maintenance as the manual states. The extended service intervals are simply ways to promote sales and state low maintenance costs. This is not a good practice. Early is better - trust me. A little extra cost early on is much better than an unexpected failure. I have had no issues.
regarding the truck you’re looking at, I would be a bit concerned about previous maintenance. Suggestion, get the VIN and call a difference RAM dealer and ask for a copy of the warranty and any possible service records on file. Never hurts to ask. My 2015 with over 208k miles, never had any turbo issues. Food for thought.

What is your 2015 completely stock? Or did you have a tune?

I left it stock until warranty ended. Then I only had the egr, dpf, and scr deleted. Engine oil was much cleaner. I didn’t have a performance tune. I didn’t feel it was worth it. I loved the performance at stock level. I did get a Pedal Commander and it was nice. Much more responsive.
I don’t plan to delete anything on my 2021 ED. At least not for a while. EPA if much tighter now. Let me know if you have more questions. Glad to help if I can.

I've been truck shopping for a few months now and looking into the ED, currently trying to buy a 2016 or newer. I am looking at a 2016 with 106 on it right now. I've been trying to get pictures of it from the dealer and finally did, decent looking truck. You guys have been a wealth of knowledge while I was lurking around finding EC reviews. I know most people do not come on forums to rave about how awesome something is but I wanted to check and see if anyone has a solid review. The truck I am looking at currently is waiting on a turbo replacement........ I am planning on adding on the extended warranty to get a few years of coverage just in case something major goes out.

I have a 2018 with 50k on it. I had put 35k of that 15k on it prior to Mar 2020. I had to get a glow plug replaced under warranty and did got the EGR recall done. I've been running the GDE tune since 15k and went with the updated EPA compliant one when it came out. No complaints really. I will say that if you are going to do a lot of stop and go maybe not the best choice, mileage tanks and frequent regents.

Dealer was supposed to let me know when the turbo was going to be put on and never did, I'm still searching for one. Would there be anything to consider about a truck from Canada? I found a 2015 with 100,000 miles for 24,000.00 about 3 hours away. Found another one with 123,00 ( not from Canada) on it for a tad more money but has 900 hours of idle and about 2800 hours driving, thought the idle was high.

If it does not come with OAs I would move on, Pay $$$$$ and if it pukes up are so upside down, its just to risky. 3,700 Total Thats 44 MPH Avg +900 Idle NO way, the engines on its down side for Life and will cost $$$$ in future repairs.

IMO service records (VM 3.0) have No value Unless accompanied by OAs

In my opinion, any ED except a 2014 model will be good. There are all kinds of folks venting about “failed ED again”. I have viewed several of theee posts and when I saw the photos, the engine compartment looked like a mud hole or a birds nest. What I mean by this is that early and good maintenance and pays off. Some will disagree but I am sold on the Fiat ED! Great engine. With thorough research and patience, you’ll find the one you want. Regarding the Canadian units, keep in mind the environmental issues influences that may cause future problems (rust, salt damage, etc.). Food for thought.

msb1288 any logical or factual data , evidence on 2014 being more problematic year other than your opinion?. Good Engine hygiene is not practice in with other power plants, yet the millions of other power plants are not plagued with repeated problems because their dirty. I agree good engine hygiene will aid in longevity on parts, but the major parts that are failing in VM 3.0 are unrelated to fifthly engine, it would be conjecture at best to label dirty engine related to 10,000+ failures.

Hello Church I was surprised to read that a dealer was replacing a turbo on an EcoD truck you are considering. I am friends with the son of a dealership owner here in western Pa. that sold quite a few Eco diesels. He and the mechanic that does most of the EcoD work both told me they have never had to replace a turbo on one. My oil has been changed at or before 7,500 miles and I replace the fuel filter at every oil change. We have had issues of asphaltenes getting thru to the engine in this area, my mechanic advised me to change the fuel filter at 10k miles or less and I should have no issues. My truck has only let me down twice, the first was a dislocated tone ring on the flex plate, the second a faulty in tank fuel pump. Both issues were covered by the extended warranty on the drive line. I am very happy with my truck and have only used the Shell Rotella T6 oil my dealer uses in it. Since the dealer is replacing the turbo I would try to get a feel for how well the truck was maintained and used. I know some have used 15w40 oil in their trucks and it will work but the correct oil is a 5w40 full synthetic euro oil like the Rotella T6. since I started changing the fuel filter also at 7,500 miles I have not had a regen cycle occur, I am quite happy with that. I use the 5W40 Euro Syn but not Rotella. I use either Mobile One or Valvoline (non-diesel). I have also seen a decline in regens. It seems to run much more efficiently.

My 2014 now has 179K miles and I love the truck. Yes the towing caused me headaches with the increase in engine temp, tried a couple of methods to lower temp, ultimate was getting a RAM 2500 to tow with. I do not like or agree with RAM lack of parts inventory, this has been an issue with all recalls. Real issues, loss of tone ring, warrantied, water leak at turbo junction, paid dealer, very disappointed that I had to replace the rear diff bearings at 168K miles, 3.92 posi. Presently scheduling to replace the fuel pump assembly in my own shop. The air ride suffered a failure due to a rats nest around the pump assembly under the sound deadening compartment. Removed compartment to allow better monitoring of rats nests.
I tuned with GDE Hot Tune and replaced with EPA Compliant program, 25mpg at 75mph on cruise control with winter diesel. I have used 5w-40 since the day I bought the truck, used with 18K miles in 2017. I have Oil Analysis done at each oil change, 10K miles, change fuel filter at each oil change. Have used Rotella T6 until it became unavailable, now use Valvoline Premium Blue, OA good on both.

I owned a 2014 EC 1500 until I traded it in this year. It spent 8 months at the dealership because Ram engineers couldn’t find the problem. I would never own an Ecodiesel as it’s a bomb waiting to attack your wallet!

Hmm this engine has costed Fait 5 billion in loses...countless VM 3.0 needing complete replacement in some cases months, in others leaving the owner with debt it will take years to recover..So to many its already attack their wallet. I am not blind and I can read quite well! I am well aware of the ecodiesels potential shortfalls. I am not even arguing any of the points you make... I was just pointing out that Spiderman112358's post had no information in it and was wondering how that was a "gooood illustration" ?

Seems to me Gearhead's tale in post #35 was a "gooood illustration" of some of the EcoD's woes.
