CEL and Service Electronic Throttle Control Message, Limp Mode But No Codes??

Husband hit a patch of ice on the road while accelerating. RPM’s shot up to about 3000, then when the truck hit pavement again and the tires caught traction, a bunch of lights flashed on the dashboard, including check engine light, then the “Service Electronic Throttle Control” message came on, and the truck went into limp mode. Limped about a mile to a gas station to get fuel. When he attempted to restart the truck, it turned over but struggled to start for about 5-10 seconds before finally starting. Drove home about 3 blocks and parked. Scanned truck with a code scanner but there are ZERO codes.

He’s tried changing the fuel filter, pulled and cleaned the MAP sensor, changed the battery (battery voltage was low), and pulled the EGR Tube to check if it was blocked, and it was not. Check engine light and the “Service Electronic Throttle Control” message are still on, still struggling to start, and still in limp mode. What else can we try besides taking it to a dealership?

This is tell tale to me that it’s the crankshaft position sensor.
It will usually put a code, but sometimes the truck will put it into inactive for some reason.

Thank you! We did have it scanned by someone with a more advanced scanner and it is throwing a code for a cam shaft sensor, most likely from when the tires caught traction again and damaged it. We were quoted just under 1K for the replacement because they have to take the Transmission out to replace it and we don't have access to a lift unfortunately to do it ourselves. Thanks for replying back!

If the aandl0402 truck had the W58 recall completed it should run with a tone wheel failure and would have an extended warranty (see att). I'm not sure if it only has a sensor failure. Usually when the tone wheel fails it also takes out the sensor.

Mine threw all of those codes as well. I can almost guarantee it's the tone wheel. The camshaft position sensor usually throws the code when the tone wheel fails. And all of this seems to happen, based on the many forums I've read on here, during some form of rapid or semi-rapid acceleration. The recall calls for the dealership to electronically delete the tone wheel and CPS. They do not physically remove them. However, I went bought a NEW CPS sensor and tone wheel myself. I had a local shop replace the tone wheel since the Ram dealership wouldn't perform the recall due to me having "modified" my truck. They have to slide the transmission back to do it. But then I sent in the receipt to Ram and they re-imbursed me under the W58 Recall.

But honestly, I wouldn't waste your time chasing parts. If it cranks and runs at all, get it to a mechanic and have him replace both CPS and tone wheel. Don't just change one of the other. It'll save you a LOT of headaches.

After months of running rough and after sending the truck to two dealerships to diagnose the problem, they finally got the truck to send a code that pointed to the tone wheel. $175 to diagnose, $2K to fix and it finally runs beautifully.
My truck is a 2017 and the problem started at 55K miles. Dealership said none of it was covered by any recall or warranty. I opened a “case” with FCA and after three weeks, they finally got back to me stating there was nothing they could do for me as the tone wheel is "not a manufacturers defect” We have two 1500 Eco Diesels in my family and the tone wheel failed in both. My Son is in the Navy and has access to a shop where he was able to repair his. (see attached pic) If this isn't a manufacturers defect, what is it? A planned failure perhaps?
I asked to speak to a manager who could make a decision because it was apparent that the case manager I talked to wasn’t allowed to. They never returned my call but I did receive a voicemail a week later stating they attempted to call and that my case was now closed. There is no record of my call or and Voicemail, They simply don’t care about customer loyalty anymore. After buying nothing but Dodge and Jeep for the last 30 years, my next purchase will most likely be the new Bronco. If your problem is the tone wheel, good luck. Print out a copy of the extended warranty that John Jensen posted in this thread and try to use that. Although it’s for FCA Canada, you may have better luck than I did in the US. Tone wheer.jpg

What I understand is there was a batch of defective tone wheels. They were installed in 2014-2016 trucks, however, those years also got good tone wheels installed. Ram has no record of what trucks got the defective products but claims that only those year trucks were affected. See W58 Recall Att.

How they treated you is unacceptable. I'm getting similar treatment over a warranty repair they are denying. The Service Advisor wrote a work order as he interpreted what I was reporting, not what I reported. Ram is denying warranty coverage because of the work order verbiage. Been going on since Sept 23.

I got my tone wheel warranty replacement(with new crankshaft position sensor) just months before the extended warranty expired. On a 2015, with more than 250,000 miles, I was lucky that I didn’t have to pay. The recall only ever covered a flash of the ECU, the warranty would have covered the tone wheel and sensor. Some VIN numbers were excluded from the extended warranty too, not sure why.

Same thing happened to my truck and they had to replace the crankshaft sensor and then some other parts but I did end up getting a refund because of the reprogramming caused it .

I had the same issue, lightning bolt from hell! Happened when I was pulling my travel trailer on a week long camping trip near Augusta GA. Got to the camp ground in limp mode. Called the ram dealer in Augusta. Took the truck in, took a week but they replaced the tone wheel under warranty. 2014 with 100 k. Its a known problem. Now I've got the lightning bolt back on this time says service throttle control. Local dealer All Star ram states they have but 1 tech and he doesn't do warranty work because it doesn't pay enough. WTF
Contacted a second dealer they day they can't look at the truck until March 12. I'm starting to think that Ram has some major dealer issues.
Guess ill just fix it myself! Likely not purchase another dodge product!

After reading thru the W58 recall that John Jensen posted, it looks like if your truck DID NOT get the "Approved Emissions Modification" and the settlement money, they will replace your tone wheel and flash your ECU to read the cam sensor when the tone wheel fails. If your truck DID get the emissions mod and the settlement, then it looks like they expect you to use that money to fix the tone wheel and they will only flash your ECU.

Got an appointment for last Thursday at my local dealer. Arrived at 8:00 the appointed time. All Star Ram, Hendersonville NC.
The service writer stated they only had one technician and he wouldn't do warranty work. He then noticed that my truck was diesel and said the couldn't work on my truck is until April. Didn't make me happy, and I let him know that. I plan to contact the District Service manger for Dodge and let him know that All Star sucks, and they are in violation of their dealer agreement. Legally they have to service a Ram vehicle that's under warranty. More to come!
I've been having the dreaded lightning bolt with truck going into limp mode and the radiator fan running at full speed when the failure happens, the truck surges and speeds up. If I turn the engine off and let it sits it will run normal for about 5 miles, then boom back to fail safe. Made an appointment with a second deal for March 12th, WTF.
This 2014 ram 1500 has had 11 visits to a dealer, 37 days down, and 8 repeat repairs. Enough is enough, bitch is I like my truck, its my every day driver. More to come!

After reading thru the W58 recall that John Jensen posted, it looks like if your truck DID NOT get the "Approved Emissions Modification" and the settlement money, they will replace your tone wheel and flash your ECU to read the cam sensor when the tone wheel fails. If your truck DID get the emissions mod and the settlement, then it looks like they expect you to use that money to fix the tone wheel and they will only flash your ECU.

If you DID get the AEM, they added an unlimited mile, 7 year extended warranty that WILL cover the replacement of tone wheel and crankshaft position sensor.

There definitely a piece of mind that comes with just having it done. A new tone wheel and crankshaft position sensor gives just a couple less things to worry about on an aging vehicle.

A great idea. Did you have the dealer or an independent do it? Mind sharing the cost?

I had it done at the local dealer. The total cost was $1700.00 I believe.
The only other thing I really worry about is the coolant line under the intake manifold. I may get an estimate on that too.

Thanks. Sounds reasonable. Yes, that coolant line can be troublesome. It's a hard decision as there are high milers that have not had that line fail.
