Welcome to the forum! Sorry it’s under the given circumstances. Burning ecos are nothing new, but the fact that the new and improved egr still can lead to issues is deffinately a concern. Sorry to hear about your experience with your truck! Please keep us posted with the investigation findings!

I should have rephrased that. What I was trying to say was you need a tune to remove the egr. His tune to the best of my knowledge keeps egr active but it allows you to unplug it.

I got mine last November and ran stage one for 15k all with egr unplugged. Jimmy told me to either leave them both connected or disconnected. If you unplug one but not the other the engine will slightly surge
Sofa keeps egr active unless you need a tune to remove it. The egr will function unless completely unplugged. My monitor showed egr operational until unplugged

Once you tune, there are two wire pigtails on the egr you are able to disconnect. One is brown the other is black. I don’t think the cover needs to be removed to access
How long did they have it for? Picked mine up for the same roof replacement and I too am getting emissions codes. I’m wondering if it’s from sitting for an extended period of time.
