Ask if there is still the same glued-on reluctor ring on the flywheel to time the injection cycle. If so, ask the construction or glueing of the thing has improved so there are fewer failures.
Pay attention to any obvious coolant changes, such as the slot cut in the from tbumper and position...
Been ready for another smaller diesel for months. 110,000 miles on mine. Actually towing a toy hauler the next few weeks. Looking at the 2019 Cummins (fuel mileage sucks) , the 2020 GM 3.0 and the new Ecodiesel for 2020.
Curious if there is still the same reluctor ring in the 2020 Ecodiesel...
Your founding premises are wrong.
First you can replace the entire motor in the $8K range. 'some have done that. Just have an independent garage do it with a new motor available from independent sources. Just look on the internet. $4-6K plus a couple $K in labor does the job. No $20K.

Let's see - My '01 Duramax lost 10 injectors at different times all around the country. 10 in an 8 cylinder engine. Even drove one time to Michigan to find a special tech who was supposed to be the best at tearing them apart and fixing the issue. Major weeks of breakdowns and huge repairs. I...
My experience yesterday is the opposite.
Went in with a GDE tune the past 85,000 miles. Truck has 110,000 miles total. Did a fuel mileage check on the way in. Also got a feel for any hesitation with GDE.
After the flash I came home. Tested hesitation with maybe three hard accelerations, one...
Heard the same. Glad is was not for repercussions dealing with testing and that aluminum block in the in-line 3.0L GM. Their history of success with aluminum blocks and diesel is quite negative. Hope this one works out. Just don't want to be the testing consumer like I was with the original...
You think too much.
Dealers really have little way to see the GDE tune and LESS incentive to do that. Rarely, maybe never, has there been a denial of warranty with the GDE hot tune. If all your equipment is in place, that's all you need.
Yesterday it took my dealer a couple hours to flash over...
106,000+ right now. Just did a little ride of 1,400 miles NOT towing, pretty rare for me. Ran 75 - 85 mph often and included some off-road dirt trails. I have an extra fuel tank so can run 1,500 miles on a load. 28.8 mpg overall.
If you do not have GDE you have mental problems. It sure keeps...
Failure rate is an unknown. Most were in the later 2014 to mid-2015 production range. Sure there were others but not as many as in those model years. The cause has never been released. Serious conjecture points to issues with assembly quality, bearing sources, assembly torque on rods and supply...
If no oil, all is fine. Oil and coolant don't mix. You put coolant in the oil and goodbye bearings.
Hope the dealer is right. One thing you can do is take off the cap ( easier if a teeny bit warm) and stick your finger in to see if you can get any oil residue visible.
Just noticed that an Ecodisel owner just went over 1/2 a million miles. He uses GDE.
Only thing is it's his second motor. First one went just under 400K but developed head issues and was replaced.
Change your question to ask if any failures have been "caused" by GDE. Now a definitive answer, "NO" can be given. There were a very few failures after owners had installed their GDE. Very few. No control module designed to make you motor run leaner and easier will make up for earlier wear...
FOUR ( like in 4) MONTHS??? That's a joke, right?
No way does any reasonable repair, warranty or not, tie up your vehicle for that long. Hope they gave you a loaner.
Now for such an extended period of time I would start guessing they do not know what they are doing and have a wrong diagnosis...
Extinction means there are none. There already are over 100,000. Many 2017's were already produced. They exist. They are just currently banned by the EPA from being sold.
Worst horn in the history of horns. Computer control delays the thing. Then when it finally goes off, it does but only for a short time with minimal response coordinated to your pushes.
Except for tranny temperatures, the rest of the numbers are right on with mine. Towing my toy hauler I only get 14 mpg. My transmission temperatures sit around 215-220*F towing along and often climb into the 230* F range with 250* briefly on steep mountain hills.
You did well.
